Brain Tumour Survivor Creates Art for Cause

Overcoming adversity has become a recurring trait in Brent Steckle’s life. At only 17 years of age, he has had to battle a brain tumour, several back surgeries to straighten his spine, and a number of other ailments related to a disease called neurofibromatosis. But he hasn’t let his medical condition slow him down. He is an Ontario Scholar, an aspiring chef, and most recently at the Charity Golf Classic for Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada and Epilepsy Support Centre, an artist whose sculptures have sold for $1,200.

At this year’s Charity Golf Classic – a fundraising golf tournament held at the Oaks Golf Club by Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada and the Epilepsy Support Centre – Brent was the keynote speaker and donated two inukshuk stone carvings for the live auction. His speech was as beautiful and awe-inspiring as his art. When he had finished telling his story of the medical ordeals and procedures he has undergone, all in attendance had been touched by the emotional impact of his incredible journey of hope. The courage he has had to show since being diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of seven, is much like the art he created: steadfast, solid and well grounded. He inspired the crowd of over 160 people to help raise over $74,000 through a day of golf, dinner, and live and silent auctions.

The two organizations have been co-hosting the Charity Golf Classic for six years. The tournament’s fundraising efforts were greatly assisted by the generosity of its platinum and gold sponsors: BMO Nesbitt Burns, Highstreet Asset Management, Investment Technology Group, Cintas, and McDonalds Restaurants.

Aside from gracing the tournament’s participants with his story, Brent’s donation of two stone carvings that he created specially for the event was the highlight of the live auction. The display of generosity and selflessness is typical for this special young man. From a young age, he realized that there were no guarantees in this world, and the obstacles he has had to face have shaped his life.

Brent has been an inspiration to many; “I have grown to see my life as a miracle. I do not regret the past or what I have been through. You can’t dwell on the past, you have to look forward to the future and what it holds for you.”
